Relationship among Mean, Mode, Median :-
● Beforehand, it is necessary to know whether the distribution is symmetrical or asymmetrical
In case of symmetrical distribution, mean mode median will be identical (Mean=Median=Mode)
Frequency curve will be bell-shaped
In case of asymmetrical distributional, value of mean mode median will be different
Frequency curve may be skewed (off-center in some way) either to the right or to the left
If the distribution is skewed more to the right (positive skewness),
then Mean and median will be greater than Mode. Mean, Median > Mode Mode is minimum |
If the distribution is skewed more to the left (negative skewness),
then Mean and median will be less than Mode. Mean, Median < Mode Mode will be maximum |
In moderately asymmetrical distribution, the relationship between mode median and mean of a series is shown as below :-
Graphic method of locating
mode :-
Mode of a series may be located through graphic presentation of data.
1. Present given information in the form of a histogram

2. Identify the highest rectangle. This corresponds to Modal Class
3. Join the top corners of the modal rectangle with the immediate next corners of the adjacent rectangles. The joining lines must cut each other. Name that Point E.
4. A Perpendicular is drawn from Point E on to the x-axis to locate the exact value of mode
