Stratified (Mixed) Sampling – Meaning, Procedure, Example, Merits, Demerits
3. Stratified OR Mixed Sampling-
● Population is divided into different Strata having different characteristics
○ you divide the population into subgroups based on the relevant characteristic (e.g., gender identity, age range, income bracket, job role)
○ Subpopulations may differ
● Some of the items are selected from each Strata
● Each Stratum should be represented in correct proportion in the sample
● 50 students in class XI ● 30 studied Maths, 20 studied Home Science in class X ● Population = 50 students ● 1st Strata = 30, 2nd Strata =20 ● Sample of 5 is to be selected:- a) 3 from S1 and 2 out of S2 b) 4 - 1 The choice will be governed by the nature of enquiry and the wisdom of investigator. |
● Mixed technique = Purposive + Random
● Division of population into different Strata is purposely done
● Selection of items is done at random
Merits-
● Covers diverse characteristics of the population
● a comparative Analysis of data becomes possible
● meaningful results
Demerits-
● Suitable only when there is complete knowledge about the diverse characteristics of the population, therefore, this method has a limited scope
● possibility of bias at the time of classification of population into different Strata
● when the size of population is already small, it may be difficult to further divide into small parts
