What is Statistics?

Layman (साधारण व्यक्ति):

     Store of quantitative information

     Quantification of facts and findings

     Raw information

 

We, as Students of Economics…

PLURAL Sense-

     Numerical Data (Averages/aggregate) that relate to some enquiry or some phenomenon

Examples:

Average pocket allowance of the students of class 10th is Rupees 100 per month

Average height of the 26+ male people in India is 6 feet compared to 5 feet in Nepal.

Over the past 10 years, India has won 60 test matches in cricket and lost 50.

(above data makes statistical sense ✓)

According to statistician Sir Arthur Lyon Bowley, statistics is defined as “Numerical statements of facts in any department of inquiry placed in relation to each other”.

 

Data which are NOT ╳ Statistics-

     Some quantitative information relating to any individual

Example:

Ramesh has 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

There are 1,000 students in our college.
