Learning Outcomes:-

Through this module, you will gain understanding on:-

1.    SAMPLE Method - Suitability, Merits, Demerits

2.    Essential Qualities of a Good Sample

SAMPLE Method-

Data is collected about the sample on a group of items taken from the population for examination and conclusions are drawn on their basis

Covering only a sample (a part) of the universe

Characteristics of the sample are supposed to represent characteristics of the entire universe

Suitability (Sample Method)-

     Very large population size

     High accuracy not needed

Intensive examination of diverse items is not required

Units of the universe are broadly similar to each other

Merits (Sample Method)-

Economical - Only some units of population are studied

Process of Investigation is time saving as only limited number of items are investigated

Better accuracy, errors can be easily identified because only a limited number of items are covered

     More feasible in large investigation

Administrative convenience as more capable and efficient investigators can be appointed in handling a limited number of items

Demerits (Sample Method)-

Only a partial investigation of the universe

results may be Biased due to investigator’s bias in the selection of sample items

Chance of wrong conclusions if selected sample does not represent the characteristics of the universe

Not very easy to select a representative sample, Specialized knowledge of Technical procedures is required for choosing a representative sample

It becomes difficult to frame a sample when universe is so much diverse

Essential Qualities of a Good Sample-

Representative - Must represent all the characteristics of the universe - Each unit of the universe stands equal chances of being selected in the sample

Independent units of sample - Inclusion of one item in the sample should not be dependent upon the inclusion of some other items of the universe

Homogeneity in sampling - If more than one sample are selected from a universe, they should not be contradictory to each other

Adequate sample size - To draw reliable conclusions, the number of items in the sample should be fairly adequate covering characteristics of the universe as a whole
