Learning Outcomes:-

Through this module, you will gain understanding on:-

1.    Quartile

2.    Deciles

3.    Percentiles

And their estimation

(All formulae at a glance)

Partition Value = Value that divides the series into more than two parts

1.    Quartile

2.    Deciles

3.    Percentiles

QUARTILE = End value of each part when a statistical series is divided into 4 equal parts

It is written as Q

1.    First quartile or Q1 = lower quartile, has 25% of the items of the distribution below it and 75% of the items above it

2.    Second quartile or Q2 = same as Median, has 50% of the items below it and 50% of the items above it

3.    Third quartile or Q3 = upper quartile, has 75% of the items below it and 25% of the items above it.

Estimation of Q1 and Q3 -

Data is first arranged in ascending order (preferably)

DECILES -

Distribute the series into 10 equal parts

Expressed as D

We have nine deciles from D1 to D9

PERCENTILES -

Divide the series into 100 equal parts

Expressed as P

There are 99 percentiles in a series ranging from P1 to P99

P50 = median value, centrally located

P25 = Q1

P75 = Q3

If a student has secured 89 percentile in an MBA entrance examination, it means that his position is below 11 per cent of total candidates appeared in the examination.
