Reliability of Sampling Data, Diff Bw Census & Sampling Method | Collection of Data
Learning Outcomes:-
Through this
module, you will gain understanding on:-
1. Factors
on which Reliability of Sampling Data depends
2. Difference
between CENSUS and SAMPLING Methods
Factors
on which Reliability of Sampling Data depends-
1. Sample size - Small sample size fails to represent the population
2. Sampling method - Population will not be represented adequately if the method of sampling is not simple and exhaustive
3. Personal Bias of correspondents and enumerators - Reliability of Sampling data suffers due to presence of personal bias.
4. Training of enumerators - If enumerators are not trained to make them expert in their field of Investigation, the sample will lack reliability.
Difference between census and sampling
method-
Basis - |
Census |
Sampling |
Coverage |
Investigator collects information relating to all the items in the population |
Only some items which represent the population are covered for an investigation |
Suitability |
Relatively small investigation area |
Area of Investigation is large |
Accuracy |
Greater degree of accuracy in the results |
Less accuracy and reliability |
|
|
Errors can be easily detected and removed because of small number of items |
Cost |
|
Less expensive |
Time |
|
Less time consuming |
Nature of items/ suitability |
Items in population have diverse characteristics |
Population items are homogeneous |
Verification of statistical information obtained |
generally not possible, as it would involve huge expenses and repetition of the whole process |
Easily verifiable In case of doubt, enumeration can be done again and facts verified accordingly |
