Methods of
SAMPLING-
1. Random Sampling-
● Each and every item of the universe has equal chance of being selected in the sample
● Investigator has no control over which of the various items of universe would get included in the sample
● Selection of sample items is left entirely to chance factors
● Your sampling frame should include the whole population.
Usefulness-
● Various items of universe are homogeneous or identical to each other
May be done in following
ways:-
1. Lottery method
● Paper slips are made for each item of the universe
● These slips are shuffled in a box
● Some of the slips are impartially drawn to form a sample
2. Tables of Random numbers
● Some statisticians have prepared a set of tables called Tables of Random Numbers
● A sample is framed with reference to these tables
An example to illustrate how Tippett’s table of random
numbers may be used is given below. Suppose we have to select 20 items out
of 6,000. The procedure is to number all the 6,000 items from 1 to 6,000. A
page from Tippett’s table may then be consulted and the first twenty numbers
up to 6,000 are noted down. |
Merits-
● Free from personal bias of the investigator
● each and every item of the universe stands equal chances of being selected
● The universe gets fairly represented by the sample
● simple and straightforward method
Demerits-
● Does not guarantee proportionate representation of different items
● Does not give weightage to certain important items
