1) Inspection method

MODE

Another important measure of Central tendency of statistical series

Value which occurs most frequently in the series (Highest frequency) = Modal Value

     Mode is the value of the variable which occurs most frequently in a distribution

Derived from french word ‘la mode”, meaning a thing in vogue or fashion

Represented by letter Z

 

Calculation of mode in individual series -

There are two ways -

1) by inspection

Simply identify the value that occurs most frequently in the series

When to use the inspection method?

     In such series where different items show different frequencies

     Number of items in a series is not very large

 

2) By converting individual series into discrete frequency series

Arrange data in ascending order

Convert the series

Calculation of mode in Discrete series OR Frequency Array -

1) Inspection method

     Value that has the highest frequency in the series

     Used when series are regular and homogenous

A glance at the series reveals that 140 has the highest frequency of 10

Hence, Mode (Z) = 140

 

2) Grouping method (mode in Discrete series OR Frequency Array)

If more than one value has highest frequency in the series

Method involves construction of -

a)    Grouping table

b)    Analysis table
