D) Information through Questionnaires and Schedules -

     The investigator prepares a questionnaire keeping in view the objective of the enquiry

 

D-i)  Mailing Method-

     Questionnaires are mailed to the informants

     A letter is attached giving the purpose of enquiry

     The informant notes the answers against the questions

     Returns the completed questionnaire to the investigator

Suitability-

     Very wide study area

     Educated informants 

Merits-

1.    Economical

2.    Original and fairly reliable method

3.    Wide coverage of study area

Demerits-

1.    No interest in filling questionnaires

2.    Failure to return the questionnaire

3.    Sending incomplete answers

4.    Lack of flexibility in questions

5.    Usage Limited only to educated informants

6.    Accurate answers may not be offered to difficult questions

 

D-ii) Enumerator’s Method-

     Enumerator himself approaches the informant with the questionnaire

     Questionnaire is filled by the enumerator himself by putting questions (Schedule)

     Enumerator himself fills the questionnaire (hereby, Schedule) after seeking information from the informant

 

Investigator -

     A person who plans and conducts an empirical investigation independently or with the help of others

 

Enumerator -

     A person who actually collects the desired statistical information

     Trained personnel hired by the investigator for field work

 

Respondent -

     Person who answers or responds to the set of questions included in the questionnaire

 

Questionnaire -

     The answers are to be recorded/written by the respondents themselves

 

Schedule -

     Answers are to be written/recorded by the enumerators specifically hired for the purpose

     Informants only supply information

 

Suitability-

     Large investigation field

     Need for specialized and skilled investigators

     Investigators are familiar with local language and cultural norms of informants

Merits-

1.    Wide area coverage

2.    Illiterates can furnish the required information

3.    Fairly accurate results

4.    Enumerators are impartial to the nature of information that they obtain

5.    Completeness of Schedules

 Demerits-

1.    Expensive method, Not suitable for private investigation

2.    Competent enumerators may not be available

3.    The process of Investigation becomes time consuming if enumerators need specialized training for particular investigation

4.    Biased enumerators lead to inaccurate data
